In this inaugural post, we will take you on a journey through the history of our organization, shed light on who we are, and provide a sneak peek into what you can expect from our upcoming blog posts.
The History of the 4Cs of Johnson County:
In 1972, a spark of inspiration ignited in Johnson County when the League of Women Voters and eleven other civic organizations came together to address the needs of our community’s children. This marked the birth of the 4Cs (Community Coordinated Child Care), and our journey towards making a difference began.
The 4Cs, a national organization that took root in the late 1960s, found its place in our community. In 1976, we proudly joined the United Way family, solidifying our commitment to the well-being of Johnson County. In 1985, a grant from the Gannett Foundation fueled our mission further.
Our early days were marked by vision and action. We initiated a referral service for parents in Iowa City seeking child care, making life a little easier for families. We provided valuable training and information to childcare workers and parents, empowering them with knowledge.
Our toy library and curriculum center sparked creativity in our community’s children, while our childcare food program ensured their nourishment. And in times of crisis, our emergency crisis child care was a beacon of support for parents facing unexpected challenges.
The 4Cs of Johnson County has come a long way since those early days, and our commitment to the community remains unwavering.
